Paul Christian Kirchner - Jewish Customs and Ceremonies - Germany, 1717 - First Edition
Jüdisches Ceremoniel, D. i. Allerhand Jüdische Gebräuche [Jewish ceremonies…various Jewish customs], by Paul Christian Kirchner. Erfurt (Germany): Christian Heinmann, 1717. German and some Hebrew. First edition (no engravings).
Detailed description of Jewish customs and ceremonies in Germany in the 18th century, by Paul Christian Kirchner. The author was born to a Jewish family, and converted to Christianity several years before writing this composition. In the foreword he announced his intentions to convince other Jews to follow his example and convert. In 1724 the composition was re-edited by Sebastian Jacob Jugendres, who corrected and refined Kirchner's scornful tone. This new revised edition included a new foreword and a series of engravings depicting Jewish customs and rituals. [7] leaves, 126 pp, 16.5 cm. Good condition. Minor damages. Inscriptions in pencil. Ex-library copy.
