Rabbi Menachem Mendel Dover Zack during his tenure as rabbi of Kandava (Latvia). Handwritten letter to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. 1909.
The Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel Zak (1871-1943), Rabbi in Kandau, Mithau and Riga, served as Chief Rabbi of Latvia. Before his passing, the "Or Same'ach" entrusted his monumental work "Meshech Hochma" on the Torah to Rabbi Zak and Rabbi Zak published it. According to the rumor, Rabbi Zack was killed while standing wrapped in a tallit on the steps of the Jewish community building in Riga, during an aktion held in the city by the Nazi Germans in 1943.
