R. Abraham Naphtali Hertz Scheuer (1753-1822) led the Yeshiva in Mainz, and eventually served as the town’s chief rabbi. He took part in the publication of ‘Eleh Divrei HaBrith’, a work directed against the nascent German Reform movement, and authored one of the oldest Halachic rulings against the use of instruments in the synagogue.

R. Wolf Hamburger (1770-1850) served as the Rosh Yeshiva in Fürth. Viewing the survival of traditional German Yeshivahs as crucial, especially given the growing popularity of the Reform movement, Hamburger held on to his position despite more prestigious offers to serve as Chief Rabbi of Fürth and Hamburg. His refusal to incorporate secular subjects into the Yeshivah’s curriculum led to its ultimate closure in 1828 - a German harbinger of the fate of the Volozhin Yeshivah in Russia over six decades later.
