Born in Arad, Hungary, Frederick Knefler (1834-1901) settled in Indianapolis. His father was a founder of that city’s first synagogue. In April, 1861 Knefler joined the 11th Indiana Infantry as first lieutenant serving under his friend General Lew Wallace. Knefler assumed command of the 79th Indiana Infantry with rank of full colonel. Distinguished in major battles including Lookout Mountain and Peachtree Creek.
