CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH of “Colonel” Montgomery Moses. Full-length view, posed with top hat and cane.

Identified in brown period ink. Photographer: Quimby, Charleston with rare label (stamp) affixed depicting the South Carolina Secession flag.

The father of Charleston-born Montgomery Moses, Myer Moses, served with the rank of major in the War of 1812.

Montgomery Moses (1808-86) lived in Sumter, South Carolina where he became a highly distinguished judge. He held strong pro-Confederate sympathies and his sons served as officers in the army.

Despite the photograph identifying him as “Colonel”, there is no substantiation of Moses having served in the military. The rank of colonel most likely was honorary. Moses is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Sumter, SC.
