1967 United States Special Mint Set in Original Government Packaging With 40% Silver Kennedy. The 1967 Special Mint Set contained five coins struck with a high quality finish and placed within a rigid plastic holder. Each set contained the 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar, which was struck in a composition of 40% silver, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Cent. As with the prior years, the special mint set coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint but do not contain a mint mark. The use of mint marks had been suspended in response to a nationwide shortage of coinage, which was blamed partly on coin collectors. While most special mint set coins feature a uniformly brilliant or proof like finish, a small minority of coins carry an appearance similar to cameo proofcoinage. Such examples are prized by collectors and carry premiums. Rather than the previous cellophane and white envelopes, the coins were mounted within a rigid plastic holder with a blue background. This holder was placed within an outer blue cardboard box.
