Maler, Zeichner, Graphiker und Gebrauchsgraphiker (1910 Posen bis 2001 Berlin), ab 1911 in Berlin, zunächst 1924-27 Lehre zum Schildermacher bei Ladewig & Co. in Berlin, anschließend tätig im Beruf, 1929-30 Abendkurse an der Kunstgewerbe- und Handwerkerschule Berlin, 1933-34 Studium an der Vereinigten Staatsschule für bildende und angewandte Kunst in Berlin-Charlottenburg bei Maximilian Klever und Erich Wolfsfeld, anschließend autodidaktisch weitergebildet und in verschiedenen Berufen tätig, u. a. 1937 Anstellung als Zeichner in einer Berliner Lampenfabrik, 1940-46 Kriegsdienst und -gefangenschaft, 1946-75 Professor an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, parallel Werkstatt für Druckgrafik in Lichtenberg, Mitglied (zeitweise Bezirksvorsitzender, Präsidiumsmitglied und später Ehrenmitglied) des VBK der DDR, ab 1970 Mitglied der Akademie der Künste der DDR und ab 1993 Mitglied der Akademie der Künste Berlin-Brandenburg, erhielt zahlreiche Ehrungen, u. a. 1961 den Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis, 1962 den Goethepreis und 1980 den Nationalpreis der DDR I. Artist information: German painter, draughtsman, graphic artist and commercial artist (1910 Poznan to 2001 Berlin), from 1911 in Berlin, initially 1924-27 apprenticeship as a signmaker at Ladewig & Co. in Berlin, then worked in the profession, 1929-30 evening classes at the Berlin School of Arts and Crafts, 1933-34 studied at the Vereinigte Staatsschule für bildende und angewandte Kunst in Berlin-Charlottenburg under Maximilian Klever and Erich Wolfsfeld, then continued his self-taught training and worked in various professions, including 1937 employed as a draughtsman in a Berlin lamp factory, 1940-46 military service and imprisonment, 1946-75 professor at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art, parallel workshop for printmaking in Lichtenberg, member (at times district chairman, member of the executive committee and later honorary member) of the VBK of the GDR, from 1970 member of the Academy of Arts of the GDR and from 1993 member of the Academy of Arts Berlin-Brandenburg, received numerous honours, including the Käthe including the Käthe Kollwitz Prize in 1961, the Goethe Prize in 1962 and the National Prize of the GDR I.
