Large Gilt Copper Repousse Vajrapani, 18th c.
From our Chinese Polychrome Collection, a large gilt copper alloy and lacquered repousse figure of Vajrapani, 18th century, standing pratyalidhasana with a ferocious expression on a repousse and chased lotus throne, left hand in tarjani mudra and his right hand raised above his five-leaf crowned head. The figure is clothed in flowing robes open at the chest to reveal ornamental body jewelry and jeweled necklaces. Vajrapani's face retains a lot of cold-painted flesh colored lacquer, and his hair is depicted aflame with cold-painted orange-red / vermillion lacquer. Origin Sino-Tibet or Mongolia, 18th century.
Size and Condition: 20 inches tall. Vajrapani is missing the small vajra that would have been in his right hand, but otherwise condition is superb. There is the expected rubbing and wear to the gilt, but this all commensurate with age and handling. Bottom of figure retains original compartment seal incised with a vajra motif. The jewels in his body jewelry have been either lost or harvested.
