The Townley Urn is a 2nd century BCE Roman marble urn discovered by the neo-classical painter and art dealer Gavin Hamilton.The intricate urn relief describes detailed bacchanal scenes. its namesake - Charles Townley, was a renowned British arts dealer who first purchased the urn in 1774 for 250 pound. Following Tonwnley's death his large collection was purchased by the British Museum. Since, many replicas of the urn have been made, commemorating "The Grand Tour".
