Touching: Toldot Yitzchak by the Grandfather of Maran the Beit Yosef - Rare Edition Amsterdam, 1708

Sefer Toldot Yitzchak by Rabbi Yitzchak Karo, the Grandfather of Maran the Beit Yosef, who was a Rav in Castilia. Printed by the partners Yaakov Aloaris Soto, Moshe Ibn Yakar and Binyamin De Yonach -  Amsterdam, 1708. [2], 136 leaves. In the National Library, the book appears, of course, in the Rare Book Collection.

A touching introduction by the author recalling the hardships he had experienced beginning with the good period in Spain and later, the expulsion from Spain and Portuga - "וברחתי לארץ תורגמה לעזרה ובעונותי עברו ראשי הלכו לבית עולמם כל בני הזכרים גדולי וקטנים תוארם כבני המלכים...". The author states that the death of all his sons is what led him to write the book. At its end, a fine poem by him summarizing his introduction.

He wrote an additional introduction on the commentary itself, containing important principles for understanding the Torah and religion in general. A joint approbation by the rabbis of Amsterdam and beneath it, a fine floral engraving.

Fine, ancient, elegantly embossed binding. Healthy paper. Fine margins. Stains. Some tears to the edges of the title page and additional leaves. Good overall condition.

On the title page, a Sephardic signature: "ע"ה יאודה הלוי ב"ר יוסף נר"ו יאיר". A single correction on the margin of the sheet.
