Sefer Ha'Zichronos. First Edition. Prague 1648.

Fundamental sefer by R. Shmuel Abuhav. Printed anonymously, with the author, location and year of print not stated. During the early 17th century in Italy, many laymen were becoming lax in various important halachic prohibitions. This sefer divided into 10 parts addresses these issues and provides an important historical glimpse of the spiritual standing and challenges facing the community.
The author chose to publish this sefer anonymously, therefore printing the sefer in Prague, despite the variety of quality printing options available in Italy.
The CHIDA in Shem HaGedolim writes that although the sefer does not mention its author, “we know it was written by the righteous R. Shmuel Abuhav, a distinguished Rabbi of Venice…” (See Meir Benayahu, Dor Acher B’Aretz, Yerusholayim 1988, pp. 27-49).
R. Shmuel Abuhav (1610-1694), was among the great Torah giants and poskim of his generation. He served as Rov of Verona and authored the famed D’var Shmuel responsa. He was amongst the fiercest opponents of Shabtai Tzvi, and invested tremendous efforts to curb the “Sabbatean” influence in Italy.
