Historic letter RABBI DR SOLOMON SCHONFELD (1912-1984), LEGENDARY HOLOCAUST RESCUE ACTIVIST AND LEADER OF LONDON ORTHODOX JEWISH COMMUNITY

Rabbi Schonfeld studied at the Yeshivos of Tirnau, Neutra, and Slabodka. With the increasing Nazi threat to European Jewry, he worked heroically with Rabbi Weissmandl (with whom he was close since his time at the Neutra Yeshiva), Julius Steinfeld (of Vienna), British Chief Rabbi Dr Hertz – his future father-in-law, and other activists, to rescue Jews mainly from Austria and Germany and bring them to England, saving thousands through the Kindertransport and other ingenious schemes before and during WWII. After the end of the war, he travelled to the former concentration camps and worked for the religious and physical rehabilitation of survivors, and brought many of them back with him to England, where he devoted himself wholeheartedly for their welfare and care. He was also deeply involved in the establishment of orthodox Jewish schools and in other activities to promote and enhance orthodox Jewish life in England.
