Dr. Philip Gould a distinguished Professor of Chinese Art at Columbia University and Sarah Lawrence College, was in his personal life a passionate collector of tribal art and artifacts from around the world. This auction features many pieces from Dr. Gould's collection of African textiles and artifacts that he curated for numerous museum and gallery exhibitions. The collection includes fine examples of Kuba Textiles and Kente Textiles. Also featured are Masks, Carved Figures, Protective Fetishes, Cast Bronze Objects, Currency Cuffs and Hoes, Iron Currency, Hatchets, Ceremonial Swords, Throwing Knives, Terra Cotta Figures and Vessels.

Kuba peoples, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa, woven raffia cloth, with open work, including embroidered open zig-zag patterning (mishyeeng) and open circles (ngeentshy, or ‘boils’). Very nice piece. Likely first half of the 20th century. Approximate size 46" x 17"
