Pierre Jean Edmond Castan (French, 1817-1892). Oil on panel painting titled "The Young Schoolboy" depicting a genre scene of young boy with books in a courtyard. Signed along the lower left.
Unframed; height: 9 1/2 in x width: 7 in. Framed; height: 14 in x width: 11 1/2 in.
Condition: The colors are bold and bright. There are no major visible losses. Due to a thick varnish it is difficult to discern if there are an areas of inpainting. Craquelure throughout the work. Areas of rubbing along the edges. There are small white fibers collected throughout the surface of the work. Some wear to the verso including a old label that is discolored with age. Some wear to the frame.
