Two Seat Depot Wagon Tin Toy
Made by Hull & Stafford Company of Clinton, Ct. - Circa 1865 15 1/2" Long x 6 3/4" Tall. The only other company that detailed their tin toys like FFF was Hull & Stafford. Originally incorporated as Hull & Wright in 1860, they became a very viable force in the production of tin toys after the Civi War. Rather fascinatingly, this toy demonstrates a trend to a more modern approach to tin toy decoration. It uses painted details on the side of the toy, but a complex stenciled design for the roof of the depot wagon. In the decades ahead, the exuberant folksy hand done decoration so prevalent in early toys would totally disappear. Mass production and reducing costs became the rule of thumb. Large hand-painted toys from the early period of tin toy production are extremely scarce and desirable.
