The Elusive Golliwog Tin Mechanical Bank
Made by Saalheimer & Strauss of Germany - Mid 1920's - 5 3/8" Tall. Illustrated on Page 111 in the Book. The Golliwog is a doll-like character created by the noted American cartoonist and author Florence Kate Upton. In her books, Golly, as he was more familiarly known, often shared his adventures with his friends Peg and Sarah Jane, characters drawn as two Dutch peg wooden dolls. Amazingly, racial tension was never really a topic in Upton's stories. However today, amid changing political attitudes with regard to race, the Golliwog is seen as "the least known of the anti-black caricatures". This rare and historically important toy is one of the most difficult lithographed tin banks to ever obtain for one's collection. At most, there are only 3 or 4 known specimens in the world.
