The Chimpanzee Iron Mechanical Bank
Made by the Kyser & Rex Company of Philadelphia - Early 1880's. With the Chimpanzee Bank, Kyser & Rex presents us with another illustration of the educated primate capable of doing complex bookwork and accounting. In fact, he hunches over his ledger, leaning forward to record your deposits every time you put a coin in the bank. This type of thematic inspiration (primates as humans) clearly springs from the controversial scientific debate about Darwinian evolutionary theory in his seminal treatise "On the Origin of the Species". The Chimpanzee Bank is one of the most fragile toy banks ever produced. Typically, the thinly cast perforated dome is riddled with damage. This example is totally intact and very superior.
