Akan Gold Crescent Moon & Bead Necklace, 10k-18k
West Africa, Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire, Akan cultures probably 19th -20th century. Gold necklace with a crescent moon pendant and series of large glass beads with multiple pierced, embossed, and cast gold pierces between. Crescent moon with horizontal details of line work and decoration. Over 37 individual smaller gold beads or charms some in the form of sea shells, one in circular pendant form, and a multitude of pierced and beautifully embossed examples. The glass bead in a large barrel cylinder form with black core, and painted surface of blues white and wavy lines with boarder colors. Size necklace 30" L, pendant 4 3/4" L

While the Akan were predominantly Christian they had traded with the moors and Islamic nations. They greatly valued and believed that the talisman, objects, and symbols of Islam were empowered with special properties.
