Spanish Manises Lusterware Plate, 16th century
Spain, Valencia, Manises 16th century plateau or plate in tin glazed earthenware. The lusterware technique was first developed in the Middle East during the 9th and 10th century to mimic the porcelains of China. The cream colored slip over earthenware with the added copper metallic luster was capable of producing a range of colors and iridescence. The technique developed and spread throughout the Muslim world and it arrived in Valencia during the 13th century. The Islamic and Gothic influenced ceramics with luster decoration was highly valued until the late 16th century as the remaining Muslim population was completely expelled in 1609. Size 7 1/4" W
