Filipino "Kalasag" War Shield, Bontoc Peoples 19th C.
Philippines Archipelagos, Northern Luzon, Cordillera mountain range, Bontoc / Bontok Igorot Peoples 19th or early 20th century. Full body wood carved shield in faded black with rattan wrapping in horizontal strips. Opening to the top in the form of an inverted "M" the lower section with a single carved opening. Light carving to the shield face with semi circle panels left and right, carved checkering and human stick carved reptilian figures. For similar examples see Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University, (Object Number 33-38-70/147.1). Size 35" H x 9" W
