Two Nok Terracotta Sculptures, 500 BCE-200 CE
Africa, Nigeria, Kaduna State, Village of Nok, Nok or Katsina or Sokoto Culture terracotta heads and half figure with characteristic features including short hair, lifelike facial features, and triangular eyes. Both examples early pieces from different regions of the Nok civilization and showcase the slight stylistic differences in facial features used in the early sculpture. largest head 5 1/2" H, 7 1/4" H on included custom stand. Nok figures and the discovery of the culture circa 1928 has indicated the remains of the Nok civilization once span a large area of Nigeria, Niger, and portions of Eastern Benin. The figures are marked by a style of elongated faces with horizontal triangular eyes and often depict warriors or important figures. The terracotta when in great condition exhibits a smooth slip and when worn the shell or white specks become visible in the layers revealed with wear and handling.
