Rare Sandstone Luohan Head, probably Ming Dynasty
Rare Chinese sandstone Luohan head. The carved face of an old enlightened follower of Buddha detailed with wrinkles, elongated earlobes, wide nose and smiling in a jovial appearance. Probably Ming Dynasty or earlier 1368-1644

In traditional Buddhist belief, a Luohan is a disciple who has attained enlightenment through intense personal effort. Luohan's are followers of the Buddha who have reached enlightenment, but have not yet attained the higher state of nirvana. They protect the Buddhist faith and its teachings. Size 7 1/5" H x 8" L

Collected prior to 2008, ex-Lacy Gallery (Vanna & Lee Lacy collection), Los Angeles CA. Lacy Gallery was founded upon six decades of collecting ethnographic and fine art. Lee Lacy was a distinguished Hollywood producer of iconic TV series and commercials.
Condition: Previously mounted on a stand now absent, the remaining mount hole filled with composite for a small round shaft instead of the large square wood peg hole still visible around the filling. Various knicks and chips throughout with the face in good detail.
