Fine Pair of French Miniature Portraits, XVII
Fine pair of French miniature portraits of Dauphin of France and King of France in uniform. Probably Ludwig XVII & King Von Rom (King of Rome). The Dauphin of France is the title of the eldest son of a French king, and the heir apparent to the French crown, from 1350 to 1830. The word dauphin is French for dolphin, and was the hereditary title of the ruler of the Dauphine of Viennois. The title was established by the royal house of France through the purchase of lands known as the Dauphine in 1349 by the future Charles V. The title was originally Dauphin of Viennois (Dauphin de Viennois), and was given to the heir apparent to the throne of France from 1350 to 1791, and from 1824 to 1830. Size 4 1/2" H, 2 7/8" W
