Bembe Ritual Vellum Wrapped Ancestor Head
Central Africa, DR Congo, Bembe peoples, ritual ancestral head carving in wood covered with leather. The rounded skull with light tattooing and white inset eyes. Reverse of the skull with a hollowed cavern for placement of ritual objects or magic. Entirety of the carving covered in skin or leather with actual teeth to the mouth. Surface is stitched and nailed together. Size 11" H x 6" W
Collected prior to 2008, ex-Lacy Gallery (Vanna & Lee Lacy collection), Los Angeles CA. Lacy Gallery was founded upon six decades of collecting ethnographic and fine art. Lee Lacy was a distinguished Hollywood producer of iconic TV series and commercials.
