Ancient Nok Terracotta Figure
Africa, Nigeria, Kaduna State, Village of Nok, Nok or Katsina or Sokoto Culture terracotta torso of a figure in crouching position with circular decoration, exposed breasts, and linear features or designs throughout. Size 7 3/4" H x 4" W
Nok figures and the discovery of the culture circa 1928 has indicated the remains of the Nok civilization once span a large area of Nigeria, Niger, and portions of Eastern Benin. The figures are marked by a style of elongated faces with horizontal triangular eyes and often depict warriors or important figures. The terracotta when in great condition exhibits a smooth slip and when worn the shell or white specks become visible in the layers revealed with wear and handling.
Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally.
