Japanese Pilots 'Kamikaze' Tanto Dagger & Flag, WWII
Japanese Kamikaze pilots tanto dagger and flag. Tanto dagger with single edge blade. Distinct gunome hamon to the edge. Appears to be Yakizme boshi type tip. Tsuba, Menuki, and pommel mounts appear to be in matching cast bronze with gilt decorations. Mounts with floral motifs matching to tsuba. Grip ray skin tightly wrapped in brown cotton. Single loop to pommel. Leather wrapped wood scabbard. Flag which is purported to be original to dagger since WWII is silk with the Japanese red sun center over a white background. The text with various meanings and poetic saying from family and friends of the Imperial Army soldier. During WWII Imperial Japan began enlisting willing recruits bound by Honor to engage in suicide missions. The pilots and their planes were referred to as Divine Wind or Kamikaze, often referenced to the typhoon that prevented the Mongol forces of Kublai Khan from invading Japan in the 13th century.
