Spanish Colonial Embossed Bilbao Sword, 18th c.
Iberian Peninsula, Spain, Spanish Colonial period 18th century Cup hilt Rapier. Straight double edge blade 1 1/8" wide at ricasso. Single fuller to the first portion of the blade engraved at either side with crosses and various patterns surrounding the Latin words (O mater dei memento mei) meaning (O Mother of God, remember me). Guard with a very attractive embossed bowl with pierced sides and the embossing reflecting foliate or floral motifs. Crossguard very wide straight quillion with multiple bars at either side and a single D Shaped Bar over the grip. Pommel hand peened with the grip wrapped in finely wound copper wire in four panels. Size 44 1/4", 37" to base of bowl to the tip.

Condition: Typical wear commensurate with age and use. The engraved blade clearly visible. Typical very minor looseness to bowl.
