Illustrated by Gustave Doré, Harper Brothers, New York, 1884 First edition. Elephant folio design. Beautifully illustrated in bright gilt and black on taupe grey cloth over boards, moderate cover, corner wear, rub edge dent and wear with some loss of fabric integrity (split). Pages and plates very good to fine condition. Dark brown endpapers. Bind and hinges loose, with no losses noted. Twenty-six full-page illustrated plates by Gustave Doré from multiple engravers. Doré's detailed macabre imagery pairs ideally with Poe's heartfelt poem of sadness and longing for his dearest Lenore. Doré died a year prior to publication, in January 1883 thus this work was his last commission. Includes 12 pages of commentary on Poe's “ The Raven” by Edmund C. Stedman.
