A Superb Satsuma Vase, Meiji Period (1868-1912)
From our Japanese Collection, a truly superb satsuma vase, Meiji period (1868-1912), of robust globular form, depicting seven separate circular reserves of figures set against a most unusual and very appealing variegated ground that morphs from emerald green, to celadon, to cream, and finally to brown, all heavily overlaid with a rich brocade of chrysanthemum heads and other floral and geometric motifs executed in gilt. The neck has a heavily gilded deep red ground which sets it off very nicely from the other colors of the variegated ground. Key fret motifs appear along the rim. Signed Kaki Yama on the base, along with what appears to be an original World’s Fair Exposition label, which is always a wonderful unanticipated extra bonus when found with the piece. As with all of our satsuma offerings, this vase is of the utmost quality. Though we do have other top tier pieces where the painting of the figures is arguably even finer, the highlight of this particular piece is the rich gilt-work along with the fantastic variegated ground, which is an especially sophisticated and complicated execution to fire correctly in the kiln.Size and Condition: 7 inches tall, 6 1/4 inches at the widest point of shoulder. Perfect condition.Shipped from texas
