ANTHONY MCAULIFFE
(1898 - 1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, 'Nuts!' Exceptional autograph signed quote, possibly war-date, on a 5 x 4 in. white card, in full: 'Nuts Dec. 22, 1944. A. C. McAuliffe Maj. Gen. U.S. Army' Very fine condition, matted with a photograph and set into a gunmetal-colored frame with stars in relief. The ink used in signing is black fountain pen, unlike the blue ballpoint he used later in life. It should also be noted that McAuliffe was made a major general on Jan. 3, 1945 - only days after uttering his one-word response to German arrogance.
