In early 1936, on recommendation by American anthropologist Margaret Mead, Louis Pierre Ledoux, recent Harvard University graduate, headed to the lower eastern Sepik River of Papua New Guinea to study the Murik people.


The results of his self-funded expedition is an extraordinary collection of hundreds of artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, diaries, and letters left untouched for 85 years.

The 1927 Equipment List includes equipment purchased by R. F. Fortune ahead of his expedition to New Guinea, from John Edington & Co. in London.

The Notes cover topics encountered in the field in New Guinea including medicine, minimum equipment, food, relations with government and other "whites", how to collect materials / curios, language, how to build a house, things to do first after arrival, etc., and even local nicknames for anthropologists such as Gregory Bateson "Long Fellow Master i Stop Along Big Sepik", and R.F. Fortune and Margaret Mead "Master Two Fello Mrs I Stop Along Bush Belong Dakuar" and "Now Two Fello Mrs I Stop Along Sepik. Before Two Fellow Stop Along Manus. One time Along all boy Belong Soda Water."
