Adventurer, Academic, Industrialist: Louis Pierre Ledoux 1936 New Guinea Expedition


In early 1936, on recommendation by American anthropologist Margaret Mead, Louis Pierre Ledoux, recent Harvard University graduate, headed to the lower eastern Sepik River of Papua New Guinea to study the Murik people.


The results of his self-funded expedition is an extraordinary collection of hundreds of artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, diaries, and letters left untouched for 85 years.

A collection of 71 Kodak No.1 camera albumen silver prints. Circa 1880-1890. "The prints of the Original Kodak and the No. 1 and No. 2 were masked to a round image. The photographs were mounted on buff or dark brown cards. The images from first generation cameras (1888) were 2.5 inches in diameter and second generation (1889) cameras 3.5 inches in diameter." Subjects of the photos include: North Dakota Indians, a freight train wreck ( Great Northern Manitoba), The Man of War Chicago, Rainbow Falls of the Missouri River in Montana, Illinois State Buildings, "Tepees near Fort Burton." Also included are 7 prints with a pale colored card and white embossed edge featuring scenes from a boat ride and a horse drawn carriage.
