'The Wandering Jew' - a collection of paper items. Late 19th century

An important collection of paper items on the 'Wandering Jew', late 19th century.

* "le Juif-errant" - three antisemitic leaves with a large hand-painted 'The Wandering Jew'. Each page presents the stereotypical character of the 'wandering Jew' dressed in rags in various wandering situations. Below the paintings was printed 'The Wandering Jewish Song' (identical poem on the three pages). France, late 19th century. Same size: 41x30 cm. In one of the pages there are missing tears in the margins without damaging the text.

* 7 cards illustrated in a colorful lithographic print that were distributed in the CHOCOLAT - LOUIT chocolate bars on the subject of 'The Wandering Jew'. France, the last decade of the 19th century. The cards make up a story that depicts the 'wandering Jew' in various scenes. On each card is the inscription "Le Juif Errant" and the Jew is the eccentric figure of the 'natural' environment. Below of each picture are musical notes from various songs about the 'wandering Jew', the lyrics of the song were printed on the back of each card.

* Engraving 'The Wandering Jew', signed by Ben Damarnan j. c. Size: 17x14 cm.

* Booklet of the poem of the 'Wandering Jew' by E. DUMONT, musical notes by F.L. BENECH. Paris. On the title page of the booklet is an illustration of 'The Wandering Jew' by Geores desains, signed in print.

The tale of the 'Wandering Jew' is based on a medieval antisemitic folk tale, about the Jew who, since he lost his death, could not lose his life, so he occasionally appears outside the historical chronology, at different times in a different character, and plays eccentric roles. The source of the legend is in 1228 in a story about a Christian priest who met a Jew, and it served as an object for various antisemitic stories about the Jews that appeared in the form of cartoons mainly in 19th century France - depicting the wandering Jew as a foreign plant threatening human society.

General condition good - very good.
