PAIR ANTIQUE EUROPEAN ETCHINGS OF FEMALE PORTRAIT

A pair of antique copper plate etchings on thick laid paper. The first: Portrait of a Lady after Agnolo Bronzino, born Agnolo di Cosimo but most commonly referred to as Bronzino; engraved by master etcher Adolphe Lalauze, 1876; signed in the plate lower to the center. Bronzino (1503-1572) was an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence. Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906) was a prolific French etcher who made the illustrations for many books. He won various awards and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour. The second: Portrait of a Lady Mrs. Fox after Sir Joshua Reynolds (English, 1723-1792); engraved by master etcher Paul Adolphe Rajon, 1874. Sir Joshua Reynolds was an English painter, specializing in portraits. John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century.[1] He promoted the Grand Style in painting which depended on the idealization of the imperfect. He was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts and was knighted by George III in 1769. Paul Adolphe Rajon (1843-1888) was a French painter and printmaker, who started his career as a photographer. Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
