Five Jewish Tokens
Five Jewish tokens. Palestine and Europe.
1. Round token, with Hebrew initials - tzadi dalet / het kuf [Tzedaka (charity) / Hevra Kadisha". Tokens like this one were intended for coffin bearers or beggars at the Mount of Olives graveyard. According to Dov Genichovsky, the tokens were issued by the Toras Chaim yeshiva founded in the 1890s.
2. Round token. On one side is a Star of David and on the other is the number "127".
3-4. Two tokens of the Jewish community in Marczali (Marcali, Hungary). On one side is the legend "Marczali I.H.K" and on the other is the denomination (the first is 5, the second - 10).
5. Square token with the Hebrew legend "Hen" (?) [Possibly an elections token. See: Friedenberg, p. 98].
Size and condition vary.
Provenance: collection of Bruno Kirschner.
