Hand-Painted Plan of Jerusalem – According to Christian van Adrichem
Plan de Jérusalem, d'aprés Adrichome. Plan of Jerusalem, according to [Christian van] Adrichem. Late 19th century. French.
Hand-drawn city plan painted in watercolor. Precise and detailed drawings of the Old City and its vicinity, with names of Jewish and Christian Holy Places. An index on the right side refers to the 58 sites appearing on the map.
Van Adrichem (1533-1585), Dutch priest and cartographer, was active most of his life in Cologne, Germany. This plan describes Jerusalem in the first century CE and is, therefore, a historical-imaginary plan as understood from the Holy Scriptures, the writings of Yosef Ben Matityahu and other historical sources. Reproduced many times, this is a very accurate copy from the late 19th century. 97.5x65cm, mounted on heavy paper and rolled. Professionally restored damage and tears. 7cm tear at center of top edge.
