The play 'The Zvi Family' by great 20th century Yiddish playwright David Pinsky, written as Pinsky's response to the Chisinau riots 1904. In his play Pinsky calls for active Jewish resistance and self-defense. Copy with impressive pencil illustrations. Unidentified illustrator.


David Pinsky (1872-1959) One of the greatest Yiddish playwright of the 20th century. Born in Mohilev, White Russia (in the Jewish seat of the Russian Empire), he moved to Moscow in his youth and went on to Vienna to complete medical studies, but a visit to Y.L. Peretz in Poland changed his life course. He began his work as a teacher in Warsaw, where his first work was printed in Yiddish, the satire "The Great Man-Friend". In Warsaw he approached the great Yiddish creators,and publishing his first works in the papers of Mordechai Spector and Perl Peretz. There he even devoted himself to public work in the Jewish labor movement.


In 1896 he moved to Berlin on his way west, and in 1899 emigrated to the United States and settled in New York. In America and New York, his storytelling and playwright flourished, and Pinsky became one of Yiddish playwrights. His plays were presented in hundreds of stages throughout the Jewish circulation. His famous play "The Eternal Jew" was presented by the young "Habima" theater, in 1906. The play was the second of the theater's plays, and awarded "Habima" advertising and prestige. .


This play - "The Zvi Family" Pinsky presented in New York on the eve of his doctorate at Columbia University, Because of the hassle of the play, he missed the exam and never won the title.
