The cycle Comenius inspired by the legacy of Jan Amos Comenius.
As a child, Oskar Kokoschka received Comenius’ book Orbis pictus as a Christmas present. As the artist writes in his autobiography My Life, the book opened up a new world for him and accompanied him his entire life. The personality and life of Jan Amos Comenius fascinated him so much that he decided in the 1930s to write a drama about him called Comenius. The theatre play was staged in Hamburg in the 1970s and was also filmed. Later Kokoschka also did a graphic cycle in color lithography (1976).
