Historic Document Signed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook and the Members of his Beit Din - Petition to the Mandate Government Opposing a Compromise Agreement with Agudat Yisrael

Lengthy [3] page letter from the chief rabbinate to the head secretary of the British Mandatory government that ruled at that time in the Land of Israel. Nissan, 1934.

A little background: After the British conquest of the Land of Israel, the Jews began to organize around various institutions. The main institutions were the Va'ad HaLeumi and the Chief Rabbinate headed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, which was accepted by most of the communities. However, the more conservative circles led by Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin and Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld opposed said establishment, and founded the Edah HaChareidit in cooperation with Agudat Yisrael. They opposed the Va'ad HaLeumi and the Chief Rabbinate, and worked for the Chareidim to leave the Va'ad HaLeumi after convincing the Mandatory authorities of this conscientious need.

This letter deals with a historic proposal for a compromise between the two institutions: Knesset Yisrael (the Va'ad HaLeumi) and Agudat Yisrael. Inter alia, the Chief Rabbinate claims that according to the agreement, Agudat Yisrael is mistakenly considered a large body (25% of Ashkenazi Jews in Jerusalem), yet it is actually significantly smaller (only 5%), since many left the Va'ad HaLeumi but did not join Agudat Yisrael.

The letter's signatories are Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook - chief rabbi of the Land of Israel, Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank, and Rabbi Yerucham Fischel Bernstein.

A historic draft is included regarding the establishment of Misrad HaRabbanut L'Adat Yisrael with the cooperation of the Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities. The document is not signed. It contains a single handwritten revision.
