"אהל שם" הוקם למען אגודת "עונג שבת" שייסד בתל אביב חיים נחמן ביאליק, כי בעיניו "בלי שבת אנו אומה בזויה ושפלה". השבת היא אות הברית בין העם לאלוהיו; היא "עומדת לא בסוף השבוע אלא באמצע שלושה ימים מזה ומזה, הניזונים מן היום האמצעי", כדברי ביאליק בחנוכת "אהל שם"
