Dr. Vladimir Nikolaevich Zhuk (1847-1915) was a well-known doctor and educator in pre-revolutionary Russia. His book "Mother and Child" was the first work on hygiene during pregnancy, childbirth and infant care, based entirely on scientific knowledge. Its significance was that the rules and recommendations presented in it made it possible to reduce infant mortality, which was so high in the Russian Empire. Doctor V.N. Zhuk saw his main task in eradicating the prejudices and illiteracy that existed at that time in the field of hygiene, as well as the neglect of this important issue on the part of doctors. It refers to hygiene as a branch of applied physiology, its recommendations are based on the achievements of modern science, both European and Russian. VN Zhuk encourages the reader to be critical of the advice presented in publications based on folk and pseudoscientific experience.
The material of the book is divided into sections that logically follow one another: heredity, pregnancy, life of a uterine baby, newborn care, care for a puerperal, infant clothing, baby accessories, mother and nurse, artificial feeding, the first years of life. The great significance of the book was that the complex scientific and medical data on the developmental features of the body of the uterine and newborn infant, as well as on the functions of the maternal organism during the periods of gestation and feeding, were presented in a generalized and accessible form for the general reader.
