Janusz Korczak, the doctor, the educator, and the great writer ("Baketana") was the director of the orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto.
On the morning of August 5 or 6, 1942, the territory of the small ghetto was surrounded by SS companies and Ukrainian and Latvian policemen. During the existence of the Great Action, i.e. the main phase of the destruction of the population of the Warsaw Ghetto, Korczak repeatedly rejected offers for rescue, because he was not ready to abandon his children and workers in the orphanage. On the day of the deportation, Korczak led the journey of his apprentices to Umschlagplatz, from where transports left for the extermination camps. Korczak walked in front, head visible, holding the hands of two children. About 200 children and about ten caregivers participated in the trip, including Stefania Wilczynska. Their journey became a legend, and a myth of the war.
