Byzantine Reliquary Cross Pendant with St John
10th-12th century AD
A large bronze enkolpion reliquary cross pendant comprising two hinged plates and an articulated suspension loop with vertical rib; obverse with robed nimbate figure in orans pose, legend 'HOANHC' (St John) above; reverse with Mary Theotokos and infant Jesus with legend above 'MP X0' and flanking 'HC XC'. 114 grams, 11.5cm (4 1/2"). Very fine condition.

Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
