Late Byzantine Silver Gnostic Ring with Leontokephalos
13th-15th century AD
A silver ring with segmented hoop, supporting a lentoid bezel engraved with facing leontocephalous, a lion-headed man, holding a sword and a branch, a snake wrapped around his legs, stars in front, inscribed below 'IAω'. 6.40 grams, 23.30mm overall, 18.01mm internal diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 73/4, Europe 16.86, Japan 16) (1"). Fine condition.

Property of a North American lady, part of her Californian collection; formerly in a South German collection.
