Western Asiatic Early Dynastic III Cylinder Seal with Contest Scenes
27th-24th century BC
A jasper cylinder seal with three groups in contest: a rearing human-headed bull and a bull-man (kusarikku) in antithetical position; between them a little goat, turning back the head, beneath a small feline, standing on its hind legs; the human-headed bull left is attacked by a nude hero with a pronounced big nose; the bull-man right protects a rearing ibex, attacked by a rampant lion, also attacked by two daggers from behind by another bull-man with bull horns and ears, and with long hair ending at waist height in a large curl, supplied with museum quality impression. 14 grams, 30mm (1 1/4"). Very fine condition.
Provenance
Property of a European gentleman living in London; previously from an American collection formed in the 1950s.
