Western Asiatic Late Uruk-Jemdet Nasr Cylinder Seal with Fish Worshipping the Goddess Inana
30th-32nd century BC
A black limestone cylinder seal with eight fishes swimming in an s-shaped formation from the left towards Inana, the Sumerian goddess of war and love; this, presented in a straightforward-imaginary perspective, with a luscious hairstyle, big eye, nose and mouth, wears a large earring and an almost ankle-length skirt; holding her left hand bent at chest height she greets the fishes with her right hand; directly in front of this are the barely recognisable contours of a waterfowl with head turned back, one of the symbolic animals of the Inana; below the bird a candelabrum with a narrow high foot, the upper part designed in form of an oil lamp with five wick holders; line borders round bottom and top of the seal. 4.3 grams, 28mm (1"). Fine condition.
Provenance
From the private collection of a North West London lady; previously with a central London gallery; formerly acquired before 1990.
