Achronim – Halachah. Glosses in the hand of the Mareh Einyaim, Rabbi Refael Ashkenazi av"d Izmir, on the Sefer Beis Dovid.


Beis Dovid on Orech Chaim and Yoreh Deah by Rabbi Yosef Dovid of Saloniki – classic halachic work by a Sephardic sage.

On leaf 1a, signature of Rabbi Refael Ashkenazi av"d Izmir: קניתי אותו לעבודת קוני אני הצעיר רפאל אשכנזי.
A few marginal glosses, some lengthy, in his hand.
On leaf 83a, his signature at the end of a gloss: כה דברי איש צעיר רפאל אשכנזי. On leaf 135b, initials: הצעיר ר"א.

Rabbi Refael Ashkenazi (d. 1825) was the rav of Izmir. He was the son of Rabbi Yehudah Ashkenazi, author of Machaneh Yehudah and other seforim. Rabbi Chaim Palaji wrote about him: "The crown of our heads, the light of our eyes, moreinu v'rabbeinu the angel Refael…king of Israel…" (Chelkam B'Chai, Drush 2).
His noted works include: Mareh HaGadol, Mareh Einyaim, Mareh HaNogah, Mareh Adam (Encyclopdeia L'Chachmei Turkia, p. 497-500).
