In order to conceal the location of the camp, all correspondence was sent through Moscow and the only element distinguishing the camps were alphanumeric codes or post office box numbers (for Starobelsk No. 15)A postcard sent from Starobielsk on January 1, 1940 to Przemyśl by the Polish Army officer Adam BednarczykThe camps only existed from November 1939 to March-April 1940. Only one card per month could be sent. After the war, the Katyn massacre was hidden, hence the people were destroying the evidence of this crime out of fear of the people's government.
