Standard Imperial Yard 1895

A brass standard imperial yard for the West Bromwich , by De Grave, Short, Fanner & Co Makers of London.

A yard is divided into 36 inches and so is this particular one. The divisions can be found along two side of the yard. The yard with three differently divided inches.

Crowned hallmarks: GIVR, GVR, ER, VR,
Hallmarks: 1895, 1905, 1917, 1927, 1935, 1944, stamped above portcullises.

As all British standards this yard received its own Indenture Number . The Indenture Numbers are kept on file and allow to trace the history of the corresponding standard. This particular standard yard received Indenture Number 2421, which is stamped on the left block.

The yard is made of brass and nicely engraved with the texts " Imperial Yard" , "Borough of West Bromwich" and " De Grave, Short, Fanner & Co Makers. London."

Original mahogany case which, like the instrument itself, still is in fine condition. On top of the lid a brass plaque is fastened reading
" BOROUGH OF WEST BROMWICH STANDARD SUBDIVIDED COMPARATOR DE GRAVE & Co MAKERS LONDON 1895.
