Legal Binder of Documents Related to Prisoners from the Underground during the Mandate Period. Jerusalem, Late 1940s
Binders with documents from lawyers Yitzckak Tunik (later state comptroller) and Buxbaum concerning the treatment of the various Underground prisoners, including letters from the detainees describing the activities and what happened just before their arrest, a letter from a father to a detainee begging the authorities to release his son, who is his sole provider, and more. Hebrew and English.
Yitzchak Tunik (1911-1989) owned a legal office in Jerusalem from 1945-1948. After the establishment of the state, he became the chief military prosecutor, and also the state comptroller.
Mordechai Buxbaum (1898-1959) was a Chareidi jurist and public figure. He was one of the assistants of Béla Kun, a Communist leader who served for a short time as leader Hungary. Later he studied with his uncle Rabbi Yehoshua Buxbaum in Galanta. He ascended to the Land of Israel, settling in the Old City of Jerusalem and was close to leading rabbis and public figures of Jerusalem, including Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, Dr. Moshe Wallach and others, as well as to the non-Jewish notables of the city. He served as the legal counsel for Agudat Yisrael and for the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. His son Rabbi Yosef founded Machon Yerushalayim.
